Unable to cope with modern life, David lives completely in seclusion and never leaves his room. His only friends are his stuffed animals, each of whom embodies an historical figure that David finds fascinating. His isolation is disrupted by the arrival of Jonathan, a friendly stranger who visits regularly to talk from the other side of the door that David refuses to open. Their growing friendship threatens the stability of David's tiny world and forces him to face the fears that drove him into seclusion.
